Ashtanga x Jivamukti
A Weekend Immersion
13.-15. November | Ashtanga Yoga Düsseldorf
Jivamukti and Ashtanga share the same roots but diverge in terms of sequencing and in-class emphasis on philosophy.
Structured around breath synchronised movement linking postures into flowing sequences, Ashtanga follows a fixed, progressive series of poses (Primary, Intermediate, and beyond), practiced in the same order each time, with an emphasis on self-practice (Mysore-style) and a strong focus on internal heat, drishti (gaze points), and bandha (energetic locks) as the mechanism of purification. It's disciplined, repetitive, and largely non-verbal in its teaching style, the sequence itself is the teaching.
Founded by Sharon Gannon and David Life in the late 1980s, Jivamukti took Ashtanga's vinyasa-based physicality and wove it together with its "five tenets":
Ahimsa | Non-violence
Bhakti | Devotion
Shastra | Scripture
Nada | Deep Listening
Dhyana | Meditation
Jivamukti classes incorporate chanting, philosophical readings, and thought provoking insights.
Across this weekend you'll get to experience the magic of both practices, as well as dive deeper into the subtle practice of breath and bandha, which underpin each practice and bring it into its fullest expression.
Breath & Bandha Workshop | Saturday
In asana practice breath and bandha are intrinsically linked, meaning bandha does not arise without the initiation of breath. And so this workshop begins with attention to and exploration of our breath. Once the breath steadies, it becomes possible to feel what bandha actually does, moving away from notions of overt muscular clenching towards an awareness of a vibrancy that changes the shape and direction of prana in the body.
We'll work with mula bandha and uddiyana bandha, exploring how they arise naturally out of a settled breath before we ever try to hold them by force. Expect slow pranayama sequences, asana integration, time to feel the difference between gripping and containing, and enough space to actually notice what's happening rather than perform what you think should be happening.
This isn't about mastering a technique in an afternoon. It's about beginning a relationship with breath and bandha that you can keep deepening, in your own practice, and if you teach - in how you guide others toward it.
